Direct-Fit or Universal
A direct-fit muffler is made for your vehicle. It bolts into the factory hangers, lines up with the existing pipework and looks like it came from the dealer. More money, no fabrication, and the right answer if you want it back exactly as it was.
A universal muffler is welded into your existing system. Less money — that is where the $89.99 starts — and on an older vehicle it is frequently the sensible repair. It will not look factory underneath, and nobody has ever noticed from the driver's seat.
We will tell you which one your vehicle actually needs rather than which one is dearer. If the pipe either side of the muffler is rusted thin, a new muffler welded to bad pipe is money thrown away and we will say so.
Flex Pipe
Flex pipe is the braided section just behind the manifold that lets the engine rock without cracking the exhaust. On a front-wheel-drive car in an Ohio winter it is very often the first thing to go.
The symptom is a ticking or rattling under the front of the car that gets quieter as everything warms up and expands. People usually describe it as sounding like a sewing machine.
It is a welded repair from $119.99 and normally done the same visit.
Patches, and When Not to Take One
If the rest of the system is sound, a patch over a small hole or a rusted seam buys real time for a fraction of the cost of a new section.
On a pipe that is rusted thin end to end, a patch is money thrown away — it will simply blow through next to the repair. We will tell you which one you have, and a free exhaust inspection is how we find out.
