Which Counties Have to Test
Ohio E-Check applies in seven counties: Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit. Wadsworth is in Medina County, so we are inside the programme and so are most of the towns we serve.
The exception worth knowing locally is Rittman — almost all of it sits in Wayne County, which does not test at all. Your registration renewal notice is what tells you which applies to your address.
Not every vehicle in a testing county needs a test every year either. Newer vehicles are exempt for their first several years, and the model-year rules change from year to year. The renewal notice is the authority; the Ohio EPA publishes the current rules at epa.ohio.gov.
What Actually Fails a Test
In our bays it is nearly always one of four things. A catalytic converter that is no longer converting. An oxygen sensor feeding the computer a wrong number. A misfire dumping unburned fuel into the exhaust. Or an exhaust leak ahead of a sensor, letting fresh air skew the reading.
There is a fifth that is not a repair at all: readiness monitors not set. If the battery was recently disconnected or codes were just cleared, the computer has not finished its own self-checks and the test will be rejected rather than failed. That one needs a drive cycle, not a part.
All four real faults are our everyday work, which is the honest reason to bring a failure here rather than to a general shop — exhaust is what we do all day.
Bring the Report
The printed failure sheet has the codes on it. Those codes are the difference between diagnosing your vehicle and diagnosing every vehicle like it, and they usually save you money rather than us time.
After the repair the computer needs a drive cycle or two to set its monitors before a retest will pass. We will tell you roughly what that looks like for your vehicle so you are not turned away twice.

Do you perform the E-Check test itself?
No — testing is done at the state E-Check stations. We are the repair side: you fail there, you come here, and we fix what it failed on.
My check engine light is on. Will I fail?
On the vehicles tested by the on-board diagnostic method, an illuminated check engine light is an automatic failure regardless of what the emissions actually are. Worth getting the code read before you book the test.
How soon can I retest after a repair?
Once the readiness monitors have set, which normally takes a drive cycle or two of mixed driving rather than a lap of the block. Retesting the same afternoon is the most common reason a repaired car gets rejected again.
What does a repair cost?
